Additional Information

In a world with 51% fewer prescription opioids being prescribed, the need to monitor, assess and treat substance use in people with chronic pain has shifted to a range of other substances that are commonly used by people with chronic pain. Clinicians need to understand the meaning and impact of the use of cannabis and alcohol on outcomes of pain management as well as understand the adherence with psychiatric medications and adjuvant analgesics.

At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  • Assess, monitor and treat people with chronic pain who use cannabis and intervene when this use interferes with the attainment of desired outcomes
  • Assess, monitor and treat people with chronic pain who use alcohol and intervene when this use interferes with attainment of desired outcome

  • Assess, monitor and treat people with chronic pain who are prescribed psychiatric medications and adjuvant analgesics and intervene when adherence related issues interfere with the attainment of desired outcomes

  • Assess, monitor and treat people with chronic pain who are prescribed opioid analgesics in the changing policy climate around opioids
