The purpose and opportunity for the learner from this 180-minute presentation is to provide a better understanding of current information on the best practices based on research and a literature review of neurogenic bowel management. Give the learner a better understanding of the bowel care journey provided by an SCI individual who has a C3/4 level of injury. The program will focus on maximizing the effectiveness and understanding of bowel care for patients with SCI, MS, Parkinson’s and Spina Bifida
After the presentation the learner will be able to:
Part 1 -Overview of NBD in SCI, MS and Spina Bifida
- Know the history of Non-traumatic spinal cord
- Understand who is affected by neurogenic bowel dysfunction
- Understand the role of the vagus nerve in regulating bowels
- Understand levels of injury by bowel type
Part 2 - Neuro Tube Defect – Spina Bifida
- Distinguish between the most common Neuro Tube Defects
- Understand the current best practices for bowel care in Spina Bifida
- Understand the bowel care challenges faced by Spina Bifida patients and the need for social and community support
Part 3 – SCI
- Discuss the Characteristics of NBD in SCI
- Understand the complications of NBD and complications during rehab
- Assess Secondary Health Problems
- Communicate goals for achieving a better QOL in SCI
Part 3 – Parkinson’s Disease
1.Know Parkinson’s Disease signs, symptoms and causes

Part 4 – MS

- Ryan Gebauer has been dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for individuals with spinal cord injuries. As a C3/C4 complete tetraplegic for 23 years, he understands the needs of the SCI community. Ryan is currently serving as the National Community Relations Advocate at Quest Healthcare. He volunteers with the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundations and is the founding member of the largest SCI support group in South Florida. He serves on nonprofit boards, including the Center for Independent Living of Broward and Trauma Resources. Degree – Masters in Business Administration, Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL
