The US is currently experiencing outbreaks of measles (rubeola) across more than twenty states and jurisdictions. Concerns regarding vaccines and vaccinations that may be fueling this epidemic. As the general public continues to look to nurses for credible and useful information, the impact of nurses in response to this ongoing outbreak and the hesitance for vaccination is critical. This session will review measles disease, the vaccine, and the role of nurses in ongoing response.
At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Review the current measles outbreak including transmission, populations affected, and outcomes
- Review the current measles vaccine, handling, patient education, and administration
- Describe strategies nurses may use to be part of outbreak response and ongoing needs concerning vaccine hesitance and vaccination confidence within our own profession as well as within the general public

Senior Consultant
Ruth Carrico PhD DNP APRN FNP-C CIC FSHEA FNAP FAAN is a senior consultant with Carrico & Ramirez, PLLC focused on infectious diseases, infection prevention and control, and vaccinology. She is also a Professor and Family Nurse Practitioner, gratis faculty, with the University of Louisville School Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases. Dr. Carrico has received training specific for healthcare epidemiology at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in conjunction with the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA).
