Take your nursing leadership and advocacy skills to the next level!  The Kentucky Nurses Association's “Leadership & Advocacy Academy” (LAA) is accepting applications for its next cohort of LAA Fellows.

LAA is an immersive 19-week educational program to provide a Leadership and Advocacy Academy (LAA) to increase nurses’ confidence and leadership competence to influence legislation and healthcare policy through their role as leaders.

To qualify, candidates must be KNA members or KNA Student Subscribers; preference will be given to post-licensure candidates.  Candidates must also submit two letters of recommendation, commit to fully complete both didactic and preceptorship requirements, provide transportation to Frankfort or other preceptorship sites and exhibit highly professional behavior and appearance as representatives of KNA. 

  Objectives:

  1. To engage nurses to allow them to take their seat as leaders in their area of
  2. To engage nurses to enable them to take their seat as advocates throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
  3. To provide the educational opportunity for nurses throughout Kentucky to achieve personal and professional growth.

  Methods:

The LAA will be facilitated using an online platform using both synchronous (real time) and asynchronous (offline) teaching and learning modalities.

  • Participants will complete weekly modules from the following three tracks:
    1. Leadership
    2. Advocacy
    3. Shadowing Track
    4. Project

                     o     Presentations of Projects:

                   Implications and Opportunities for KY nurses.

  • Various teaching strategies will be utilized, including:
  • Self-study
  • Guest lecture
  • Case Studies
  • Small group exercises
  • Participant preparation/review of content prior to application during synchronous session
  • Reflection
  • Skills Inventories (leadership and advocacy)
  • Application of leadership/advocacy principles in work setting and/or during internship
  • Article review and application
